What Is a Weighted GPA?

A weighted GPA gives extra credit to students who take more challenging courses like AP, honors, or IB classes. Unlike an unweighted GPA which tops out at 4.0, a weighted GPA can exceed 4.0.

Most high schools in the US use weighted GPA to reward students who push themselves academically. Colleges often look at both weighted and unweighted GPA when evaluating applications.

Weighted GPA FAQ

Common questions about weighted GPA calculation.

In a standard weighted system, the maximum GPA is 5.0. This would require earning an A in all AP or IB courses. However, some schools use different weighting systems, so check your school's specific policy.
Most colleges look at both. They use unweighted GPA for standardized comparison across schools, but they also consider course rigor โ€” which is where your weighted GPA and the number of AP/IB courses matter.
No. While +0.5 for honors and +1.0 for AP/IB is the most common system, some schools use different scales. Always check your school's official GPA policy. This calculator uses the standard most widely used weighting.
Not directly. A lower weighted GPA from taking harder courses is viewed more favorably than a higher unweighted GPA from easy courses. Colleges value course rigor highly in admissions decisions.
